The marketplace out-traded every other Ethereum Layer 2 NFT marketplace. The wallet standardized an onboarding flow MetaMask and Phantom adopted later.

OVERVIEW

GameStop moved into NFTs in April 2021. I joined as founding designer on the marketplace, owning onboarding for creators and collectors.

New buyers without an Ethereum Layer 2 wallet were dropping off before checkout. The third-party wallets available then assumed you already understood seed phrases, gas, and Layer 2 before you'd bought anything.

So the wallet became ours to build. It shipped as a browser extension and an iOS app, and the marketplace treated it as the default way in.

01

A buyer without a wallet gets set up mid-checkout and comes back to finish the purchase, instead of hitting a dead end.

02

Loopring and Immutable X activation happens on the item page, so it's not a surprise at checkout.

03

Wallet setup skips the seed-phrase verification step most crypto wallets require.

04

Ethereum, Loopring, and Immutable X balances all resolve inside the same browser-extension popup, not a separate page per network.

Immutable X arrived with its games named on the page — so a new network read as three things to play, not a chain to learn about.
The Layer 2 prompt sits next to Buy Now, so the network you need is on before checkout instead of being discovered there.
First-time buyers get their own column, so the question is email or GameStop wallet, not a list of brands they've never heard of.
Every network shows its balance before you switch to it, with a running total underneath. Nobody has to hop layers to find their own money.
Turning on a new network takes one button, and nothing else about the wallet changes: same tabs, same gallery, same balance list.
The review step names every fee before you confirm, including GameStop's own cut.
A send counts blocks as they confirm and says outright that closing the window won't cancel it.
On mobile the wallet picker drops to the two options most buyers actually use, rather than shrinking the desktop list to fit.

Constructing all that UI elements contextually on a small screen for users was one of the most difficult and yet satisfying challenges in my design career.
